The Tanana River was essential to the success of Rika's roadhouse
as well as the Valdez-Fairbanks Trail. Here, near it's confluence
with the Delta River, was a ferry crossing. John Hajdukovich built
a log sided roadhouse here in 1909 replacing a smaller one. Rika
Wallen worked for John for several years before getting ownership
and changing the name to Rika's Roadhouse. The ferry crossing funneled
business her way and allowed her to add a wing to the roadhouse
in 1926. The AlCan Highway connection to the Richardson Highway
added a bridge over the Tanana reducing her clientele. She continued
a limited business into the 1950's.
