Tok is the first town, with all visitor amenities, on the AlCan,
after crossing the Alaska border. It's 92 miles northwest of the
border. The town has been anointed as the "Gateway to Alaska,
" and "Mainstreet Alaska." The name "Tok"
may be from original Athabascan settlers' word for water. Another
source says it was named by AlCan construction crews camped here
in 1942.
The center piece of the town is the Tok "Mainstreet Alaska"
Visitors Center. It's home to the chamber of commerce, and library,
as well as the wealth of information for travelers. The structure
was funded privately with no government money involved..
