There's
a parking area, on the south side of the AlCan, a mile west of Tetlin
Junction. It's a good place to examine the Tanana River and bridge.
Interpretive signs explain the historic importance of trade routes
fanning out from this area, and bridge construction. The Tanana River's
original sources; the Chisana and Nebesna Rivers join, in Tetlin National
Wildlife Refuge, to become the origin of theTanana. It flows west,
and northwest for 440 miles before joining the Yukon River; it's the
largest tributary to the Yukon, and the fifth longest in Alaska. The
Tanana River flows north here, toward the bridge that crosses the
AlCan. |
